If you want to spend some enjoyable time on the water with like-minded people, build miles and hone your skills, then our mile builder trips will be perfect for you. We offer short two day sailing adventures along the south coast of England with expert tuition to help gain experience and confidence whether you only have some basic sailing experience or are an old hand getting back into the game.
Based on our 40ft or 52ft yacht, mile builders are a great way for sailors to train and improve their skills before their next RYA exam while also adding miles to their log book. These trips are aimed at individuals with various skill levels and ambitions so each weekend is tailored to those onboard, let us know your goals and we will help you achieve them.
We currently have a couple of different mile building legs, all departing from Hamble:
Option 1 goes eastwards from Hamble to overnight in Brighton, then back to Hamble.
Option 2 goes westwards from Hamble to overnight in Weymouth, then back to Hamble.
Option 3 goes eastwards from Hamble to overnight in Eastbourne, then back to Hamble.
(this can be used as a 60 mile Skippered passage)
These two day sessions are aimed at those who wish to have fun, gain confidence and get some distance under their belts while near to home. If you wish to partake in longer and more challenging jaunts, please have a look at our European Mile Builder page. If you would like to gain some more experience skippering you might also be interested in our Mile Builder Club
Meet on the boat in Hamble, in the evening for safety chats and a meet and greet so everyone gets to know one another. This is a good opportunity to let the instructor know exactly what you’d like to get from the experience. First night on board and sleeping in your cabin.
Leave the marina in the morning and begin the sailing and training towards that evenings destination, be it Brighton or Weymouth. During the day you will get the chance to practise your sailing skills, from boat handling, sail trimming and reefing and pilotage.
The evening will be spend moored up in a local marina and having dinner in a nice place on shore in either Brighton or Weymouth and a second night sleeping on board.
Up early (don’t get too tipsy the night before or you might regret it!) for the sail back to Hamble. If there’s anything that you still want to try or any questions you have, please bring it up with your skipper.
Everyone disembarks once the boat is back in Hamble and hopefully you’ve gained what you’ve needed from your trip, whether that was some new skills or just having some fun learning the ropes.
I have had some of the best sailing experiences of my life thanks to Sail Racing Academy. The team is professional, friendly and extremely helpful. They don’t shy away from letting you get hands on and your sailing knowledge and skills will come on leaps and bounds by signing up to races and their experiences.
I signed up to complete the 2019 Fastnet trip and the build up races. I had unforgettable experiences – sailing a spinnaker past the channel islands at 10 knots, helming around the Fastnet rock during the race and beating the other boats in our class. At the other end of the spectrum, we’ve also sailed with my Dad who hasn’t sailed for years on one of the great mile builders. We got out to sea easily, safely and at great value.
I really recommend signing up for trips with Sail Racing Academy whether in the Caribbean, the UK or the Med. You will remember these trips fondly for a very long time!
