Wednesday 6th May 2020 is the official start to the fourth edition of the Antigua Bermuda Race. First organised in 2017 with 40 boats, this very young race has been perfectly timed to coincide with the end of Antigua Sailing Week as a last hurrah for the Caribbean racing season. With this 935nm oceanic offshore race taking boats out of the Caribbean and into the great North Atlantic, what a way to finish the season!
Designed to suit a wide range of boats, the festivities start with a crew party around Nelson’s Dockyard on Antigua. The following day, following a long established route for oceanic yachts, the race officially begins as the boats leave Fort Charlotte, Antigua and head out to the wide blue beyond. Once past Barbuda, the boats will be out of sight of dry land until Bermuda is spotted on the horizon. In the meantime, this tropical adventure can include anything from raging Atlantic rollers to calm glass like conditions where every tactic and skill will be put to the test to keep the boat speeding along the ocean waves.
Finishing just off St David’s Light on Bermuda, there’s the party and prize giving, hosted by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to look forward to and to celebrate a successful race. Afterwards boats either head north back to North America or like us, back across the Atlantic towards a European racing season.
If you want to gain more offshore racing experience and get a taste of sailing the Atlantic without the commitment of an ocean crossing, then this could be the race for you.
