The Transatlantic Race 2025 continues the legacy of the first significant transatlantic ocean race, which began in New York Harbour on 11 December 1866. This course is less frequently raced than shorter offshore tracks, making the 2025 event the 32nd transatlantic race organised by the New York Yacht Club. The challenging nature of the journey from the United States to the UK, often encountering at least one major storm, makes simply completing the race one of sailing’s most prestigious achievements.
Though Sail Racing Academy is all for everyone enjoying themselves, safety remains our top priority. We require anyone interested in this trip to have a phone conversation with one of our team members to discuss expectations. We also recommend crew members take a sea survival course.
Unless having arrived with the boat, the crew will meet in Newport, Rhode Island and will disembark in Cowes, UK or Hamble, UK. The nearest international airport to Newport is the Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD). After Prize Giving in Cowes, we’ll likely be sailing to Hamble. You’re welcome to take the ferry or sail back with us. The nearest international airport is Southampton Airport (SOU), however, there are trains from Southampton to London where you’ll often find more convenient flights and travel options.
All travel to and from the airports is not covered by the race price.
We will depart Newport on 18th June 2025 with the starting gun.
Sao Jorge joined our fleet in 2021, she is coded to Cat 0 (Can legally sail anywhere in the world) she meets the highest British yachting safety standards and carries the highest level of safety equipment, she’s not as competitive as Escapado having a smaller sail wardrobe and shallower keel, however, she is an excellent boat to learn on being incredibly stable, spacious and comfortable. She won the round Barbados race in 2022.
Please take into consideration when planning your trip that not all of the dates below have been confirmed. We may alter the training and preparation dates in the coming weeks. While the start of the race has been confirmed for June 18th, the expected arrival in Cowes is TBD. Email us directly if you’d like our advice on planning your return journey after the race.
Arrival. You will then have 4 days of boat preparation, seminars, training, and familiarisation of the boat and your fellow crewmates. There are usually plenty of opportunities to join in the local social activities put on by ARC to make new friends and get to know the competition during this time. Please bear in mind that all the boats on the dock will be taking part in the same activity of repairs, last-minute enhancements, provisioning, and tweaks and we are no different so please expect the first few days to be hard work.
