We’re offering an apprenticeship opportunity that will allow an aspiring sailor to join our crews for a year of sailing adventures. Sailing through the UK, Mediterranean, and Caribbean you’ll have opportunities to network and gain skills in the 3 major sailing centres of the world. You will gain hands-on experience in mile builders, deliveries, and regattas while assisting with maintenance tasks onboard. While this opportunity doesn’t come with monetary compensation, it offers an invaluable chance to immerse oneself in the world of sailing and develop essential skills over the course of a year.
Your time with us will be varied. You will be required to actively participate in all elements of yacht maintenance, as well as sailing and racing. Also loading, cleaning and getting the yacht ready for regattas. You’ll often stay with the boat for extended periods of time, and take on more leadership and challenging tasks while sailing.
You need to be self-motivated, able to work alone and with a team.
There will be times where the pace will be relaxed and you can work at your own speed and as part of a team. And at other times you will be working alone and to tight deadlines, where initiative, self-motivation and communication are key.
By the end of your time with us, you should have achieved your goals. We hope that you will leave us as a confident sailor who is able to prepare and sail independently; lead teams; identify problems and know how to resolve them.
Should you wish for your program to include work towards official qualifications, that is something we are happy to discuss.
You will be actively involved in the mile builders and regattas from welcoming additional clients onboard, helping provision, and of course partaking in the races. Outside of these times, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local area, relax and recuperate.
No two weeks are the same. Apprentices take part in maintenance, race preparation, deliveries, and events, learning alongside our skippers and experienced crew. As skills and confidence grow, apprentices are given increasing responsibility and leadership opportunities. Our skippers provide guidance and training throughout.
Most trips consist of one professional skipper, one to three apprentices, and a number of paying customers. This creates a great opportunity to learn while gaining experience working with a variety of people.
Apprentices regularly move between boats as part of the programme. We have three boats in our fleet, and we also occasionally charter additional yachts or work with other owners to create more opportunities.
Apprentices generally live onboard throughout the programme, both during trips and between events. If accommodation ashore is ever required for operational reasons, we will arrange it.
Food for meals prepared onboard is covered by the programme. Any restaurant meals, drinks, or personal spending ashore are your responsibility. All crew share the responsibility of cooking onboard.
You are responsible for your travel to join the programme and your journey home at the end. Other costs vary depending on personal spending, kit requirement, and any visas needed for your nationality.
The yacht carries its own insurance, but apprentices are responsible for arranging suitable personal travel insurance.
We aim to provide one day off per week where practical, but sailing schedules can be unpredictable and flexibility is required. In normal operations, hours can be long, and in emergency situations they can be very long with extended periods of work. Over quieter periods, including some holidays, there may be full days off, but overall you should expect a demanding and variable schedule.
Not necessarily. Apprentices take part in most events, bu participation depends on crew numbers and available spaces. Where places are limited, opportunities are shared between apprentices.
Yes. We are happy to sign logbooks, confirm sea miles, and provide records of experience gained during the programme. We also provide references for apprentices who complete the programme.
