GAP Year Sailing

Tabago Cays

An early start in Bequia meant we could head off to Tabago Cays with a good chance of securing a mooring. Even before arriving, we came across several turtles and a couple of stingrays which gave us a great feeling for what was ahead. Free Willy, originally from St Vincent, helped us moor up between the main islands in the perfect spot. Empty sandy beaches were only a short swim away with crystal clear turquoise water surrounding Escapado. We made the most of the snorkelling and beaches in the afternoon telling ourselves there wasn’t another place in the world we would rather be. Us youngsters were constantly pinching ourselves relaxing in paradise.

Free Willy kindly invited us for dinner at the local restaurant, and as we loved supporting the locals, we jumped at the opportunity for some freshly caught lobster. Just as the sun set in the evening, we paddled over to meet Free Willy who had prepared a table for us under some beautiful fairy lights looking out onto the beach with palm trees and Escapado in the background. Many of us truly believe this meal may be one of the best we’ve ever eaten, fresh lobster alongside garlic potatoes, local vegetables and delicious rice. The setting made it even more amazing with iguanas wandering around as well as a group of hermit crabs shuffling along the sand. It was a night we will never forget and also a place we have promised ourselves we will one day go back to.

Tobago Cays easily lived up to expectation and has cemented its spot as one of the highlights for all of us. Simply paradise.

The next morning we were woken by Free Willy who offered to drive us free of charge to another island off Tobago Cays, known as a ‘Turtle hotspot’. We quickly found out that ‘Turtle hotspot’ was a an understatement for this small island. It was hard to go a minute without spotting another beautiful turtle who was perfectly relaxed with snorkelers like us hovering above. For Tom and Iona who had never swum with turtles, this was a moment they couldn’t believe was actually happening. It was a sad feeling leaving the next morning onto Union island. We had so much to thank Free Willy for as he made our experience there simply incredible. The hype Sophie was giving Tobago Cays easily lived up to expectation and has cemented its spot as one of the highlights for all of us. Simply paradise.
